How we track sweepstakes casino laws

Each row comes from a record in our data, and each record points at its source. For enacted bans we read the bill or the code section on the legislature's site wherever it would load. The effective date is taken from the text, or from the state's general rule when the bill does not print one, and the page says which.

What you should know about the limits: for four states the official text would not load and the dates come from trade press and a law-firm alert (marked “secondary” in the data). For 17 states where we found no ban, the finding rests on a search of trade and legal press rather than on the legislature's own pages. None of the records has yet been reviewed by a lawyer. When one is, the state page says so.

The method is described in our editorial policy. If you see an error, tell us: a correction is dated and stays visible.
