Are sweepstakes casinos legal in District of Columbia?
There is no District of Columbia statute that names online sweepstakes casinos, and we found no order from a state regulator or the attorney general telling operators to leave. That is the whole basis for listing casinos here: absence of a prohibition, not a licence. No state agency licenses or audits these sites, so a dispute with an operator is a matter between you and the company under its own terms.
B26-0656 (Internet Gaming and Consumer Protection Act of 2026) would legalise internet gaming and ban sweepstakes platforms. A public hearing was held on 2026-05-04. Legislation is open: B26-0656, B26-0656 (legalises internet gaming and bans sweepstakes platforms). If it passes, this page changes the day it does.
How to start
- Check the list above, not the casino's ads. A casino appears here only if its own terms do not exclude District of Columbia.
- Register with your real name and address. Prizes are paid only after identity checks, and a mismatch is the most common reason a redemption fails.
- Take the free coins first. Every sweepstakes casino must offer Sweeps Coins without a purchase. Buying Gold Coins is optional.
- Read the redemption rules before you play for prizes: the minimum, the playthrough on Sweeps Coins, and how long payment takes.
- Keep records. Prizes are taxable income. See our tax guide.
Frequently asked questions
